Marlboro College

Academics Kendall O'Connell

Sophomore 1

Academic Interests. I am studying Biology and Environmental Science. These subjects interest me because they are rangertastic and can be applied to my dreams of becoming a park ranger with the National Park Service.

Favorite Marlboro Classes. Physical Geography and the cross cultural class I took that went to the Pine Ridge Reservation and the Navajo Nation.

Favorite Thing about Marlboro. The Outdoor Program (the OP). It offers great opportunities to students no matter the level of experience of the person. It is a really great stress release to visit places filled with fun and magic! You can learn to white water kayak, rock climb, cave or ski (and so much more) with various experts in those sports. I came to Marlboro because of rock wall twister and stayed to help build a timber frame green house down by the farm!

Favorite Place at Marlboro. The rock wall in the basement of Whittemore Theatre. I am a wall monitor…I would love to open the wall and climb with you sometime! It’ll be a blast!!

Community Involvement. I am a Work Day coordinator, a member of the Environmental Quality Committee (the EQC), a member of the Environmental Advisory Committee. (the EAC), a member of the Health and Wellness Committee and a Rock Wall monitor for the OP. Ask me about any of these things – I’d love to chat if any of these interest you! I am also leading the Climbin’ Lobstas bridges trip in the fall.

Advice. When I was a freshman I would have liked to have known just how friendly and approachable everyone at Marlboro is. It’s great to know there is a whole network of support out there both academically and non-academically if there is anything I am unsure of.

Goals. Before I graduate I would like to become a junior ranger at every national park in Vermont, Massachusetts and New Hampshire (or at least as many as possible). Anyone who wants to embark on this journey with me, please do!

Summer Plans. This summer I am working at a nature centre in southwestern Connecticut. I am also climbing a lot this summer. Woot woot!
