EXPERIENCING THE ARTS - ART892

This course is an intensive immersion program in the arts. By attending professional performances of theatre, music and dance, along with exhibitions of visual arts in a variety of media and genres, students experience first hand the making and performance of art. Students will spend 3 weeks in London with faculty exploring museums and galleries, attending concerts, dance performances and theater performances as well as critically analyzing the experience through regular seminar discussions and analytical exercises. Meets 8-12 hours daily in London, U.K. (21 days). Course is taken in conjunction with "Thinking Critically about the Arts." Prerequisites: Sophomore 2 standing; permission of instructors and/or demonstrated interest in the Arts through Plan or expectation of Plan work in the Arts

This course is designed to develop students' comprehension of key concepts and critical vocabulary pertinent to critical analysis and interpretation of practices in the performing and visual arts. Parallel and common themes across the arts will be explored in conjunction with extensive reading of background texts that probe critical frameworks and chronicle historical records in the arts and aesthetics. Studies will include the reading of plays, critical listening to music, critical observation of visual objects of art and projects exploring the making of art. Students will also attend concerts, theater productions, films, and exhibitions of visual art in museums and galleries. Prerequisites: Sophomore 2 standing; permission of instructors and/or demonstrated interest in the Arts through Plan or expectation of Plan work in the Arts
