Academics Interlibrary Loan Policy
Marlboro College faculty, staff, and currently registered students are eligible to request materials from other libraries via Interlibrary Loan. For students, there is no limit to the number of requests you may make, but if you are requesting more than ten items at a time, we may ask that you consult with a librarian or your plan sponsor. Townspersons and alumni/ae are not eligible to use Marlboro College's interlibrary loan services; check with your local public library. (Special interlibrary loan information for graduate students)
Most requests are filled within a two week period. Some materials take longer. You will be notified via email when your material arrives.
Due dates for ILL materials must be strictly honored so that we can maintain good relationships with lending libraries and thereby ensure continued borrowing privileges for the entire community. Most libraries lend materials for a one month period, and some will grant renewal for another month. Contact Interlibrary Loan to request a renewal before the date your item is due. Returning books late or not picking up items that were requested may result in the suspension of your borrowing privileges.
The college pays all charges related to ILL services with the exception of fines and replacement charges. All overdue and lost material costs will be paid by the borrower. ILL privileges are suspended until these fees are paid.
Librarians screen ILL requests for possible purchase. If materials can be purchased at a reasonable cost, and obtained within a time frame similar to borrowing, material may be purchased instead of borrowed. This policy supports collection development as well as enabling users to have access to materials for longer than they would through ILL.
Certain items are difficult to obtain via ILL. These include, but are not limited to: reference books, dissertations, and special collections items. This is because typically libraries do not loan these types of items. Library staff are happy to discuss requests with you and explore alternatives.
You may request material via the online ILL Request Form or sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Using the online ILL Request Form is preferred. Always use complete citations. If requests are incomplete, the request may take longer to process. For citation help, please consult with a librarian.
The borrower is responsible for complying with US Copyright Law.
Marlboro College lends books, videos (VHS & DVD), CDs, and audiotapes, and supplies copies of articles/chapters, free of charge. Borrowers are responsible for complying with US Copyright Law.
Student Plans, Graduate Center items, microfilm, reference materials, reserve materials, special collections materials, and oversized materials are not lent. Loans are made to institutions only, not directly to individuals.
Loans are made for a period of one month from receipt of request. Renewals are available if the item is not requested by another patron or at our discretion. The college does not grant renewals for A/V materials.
Loan requests may be submitted via OCLC or the Vermont State Department of Libraries (VALS) system.
Materials must be returned in the same condition they were loaned. The borrowing library assumes responsibility for replacement or charges for lost materials. Materials are sent via USPS, standard library rate.
