Acquisitions Policy
Marlboro CollegeRice-Aron Library and Graduate Center Library
The Marlboro College Special Collections wishes to preserve and make accessible materials related to Marlboro College and to Rudyard Kipling’s time in Brattleboro. Materials will be collected for the purpose of documenting the history of Marlboro College and the surrounding area, including information about Kipling and his time in Brattleboro. Materials are collected and preserved to give a clear picture of life at Marlboro College, as well as important information about the community, its administration, and academic programs. This information is valuable for research, as well as a vital record of Marlboro College’s history.
Materials contained in Special Collections are:
- Materials relating to the history of Marlboro College, including publications, work by community members, promotional materials, records involving the college’s relationship to the town of Marlboro, and some administrative records.
- Materials relating to Rudyard Kipling, particularly to his time in Brattleboro.
- Materials relating to local history that have some bearing on F. Cabot Holbrook, Howard C. Rice, their families and their work on Kipling, and Naulakha.
Librarians will organize and preserve college records and publications.
- Materials and publications from within the college may be solicited by a staff member if time permits, but otherwise will be added by donation from the department within the college.
- Materials relating to Rudyard Kipling, and Naulakah will not be solicited, but will be accepted as gifts if they are deemed pertinent to the collection.
- Materials relating to local history, F. Cabot Holbrook and Howard C. Rice will be accepted if donated only if they are deemed pertinent to the collection or if they are rare materials and no more suitable organization exists to take custody. They will not be solicited.
Types of materials accepted are loose papers, rare books, microfilm, photographs, negatives and manuscripts.
Materials will be available to researchers and to members of the community by arrangement with library staff. Occasionally materials may be removed from special collections at the discretion of the library director.
