Marlboro College

Academics Film Intensive Course Descriptions

Overview

Film Intensive students are expected to enroll for 16-18 credits (or their equivalent) that will be divided between the arts and humanities. The production of the film itself will also draw from each area, through the application of artistic skills in the screenplay’s writing and each of the film’s production area, and through the efforts to articulate, through our film of Northern Borders, the complex human experience of people living in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom during the mid-1950’s.

As students participating in this Film Intensive, you will be expected to take the program’s core courses: 1) The Literature of Northern New England, 2) Northern Images on Screen, 3) Northern Borders Pre-Production, and 4) Northern Borders Production. There will also be electives in screenwriting and a film studies class, Producing Low Budget Indie Films: On Camera and Behind the Scenes.

When you are accepted into the program, you will be asked identify your primary film interest. This will place you in one of six departments where you will be expected to enroll and will be working during pre-production and production. These areas are: 1) actors and directors, 2) cinematography (includes camera, grip, lighting and sound), 3) editing, 4) producing (includes producers, assistant directors, locations, production managers), 5) documentary production (still photography and the behind-the-scenes doc) and 6) production design (includes props, costumes, set dressing, vehicles, hair and make-up, scenic painting, art direction).

Each class will emphasize both the theoretical and practical elements of their respective courses of study. Depending on your interest and focus during the Film Intensive, credit will be awarded in areas of film studies, literature studies, film production, screenwriting, studio arts, theater arts (acting, design) and photography.  Project director Jay Craven would also be happy to discuss possible individualized tutorials where students can pursue selective interdisciplinary or cross-disciplinary work.

For more information or to discuss your filmmaking interest contact Jay Craven (jcraven@marlboro.edu).
