Admissions Dual Degree Program

Master of Arts in Teaching for Social Justice

Why: Good teachers are always in demand. If you are looking for a master’s degree that may lead to a reliable career while supporting your values, consider the Master of Arts in Teaching for Social Justice (MATS). This practicum-based, one-year master’s program not only provides you with a license to teach elementary, middle, or high school, but also inspires a deep appreciation for social equity within the classroom and beyond.

What: While other teacher licensure programs typically include a semester-long internship, the MATS program gives you a full year of classroom experience alongside a gifted mentor. This is complemented by one day of seminar each week with graduate school faculty and supportive colleagues. Besides learning about language and literacy, theories of child development and educational policy, you will find that teaching is a way to create the world you wish to see.

In addition to its focus on social justice, the MATS program is certified to provide licensure in five endorsement areas:

How: You can prepare for a seamless transition into the MATS program by focusing your undergraduate course of study on one of these areas, developing an expertise in your academic discipline that your students could look up to. You will begin your course work at the graduate center and classroom apprenticeship in the fall after completing your bachelor’s degree.

“I wanted the same level of creative and critical thinking in a teacher certification program that characterized my undergraduate experience. The faculty is completely dedicated to educating active and effective teachers and the students are determined to learn what good teaching looks and feels like.”
