Marlboro College 67th Commencement May 18, 2014

“This spring, I watched you face your fears and dig deep to finish,” said Marlboro President Ellen McCulloch-Lovell, addressing the class of 2014. “What struck me most? Three qualities you demonstrated: the bravery with which you took risks—intellectual and creative; the courage you showed presenting your work and yourself in front of the rest of us—so exposed, so powerful; and the intensity with which you cheered each other on. By now, you’ve guessed my theme: you are strong.” Faculty, family, and friends gathered to celebrate the 62 graduates on a picture-perfect spring morning. Emma Thacker was the senior speaker, and Andrew Delbanco, a distinguished American studies professor at Columbia University, delivered a heartwarming commencement address. Dr. Delbanco and his brother Nicholas Delbanco, an equally distinguished professor of literature at the University of Michigan, each received honorary degrees. The class of 2014 was finally regaled by a valediction from Abdelhadi Izem, venerated Fulbright fellow in Arabic language.
