MARLBORO, VT -- The third and final lecture in the series
entitled "Journeys into Fear: The History, Heritage, and Censorship
of Horror Comics" concludes at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 13, in
Marlboro College's Whittemore Theater, when cartoonist and illustrator
Stephen Bissette focuses on the horror and crime comics boom of
1952-1954, the U.S. Senate Subcommittee Investigation under Democratic
Senator Estes Kefauver in April 1954, and the rising tide of censorship
of comics in England, France, and other countries.
Bissette has been a working professional in the comic book industry
for more than twenty years, and writing professionally for more
than a decade. He is best known for his multiple award-winning collaboration
with writer Alan Moore and inker John Totleben on DC Comics' "Saga
of the Swamp Thing" (1983-87) and for his work on Mirage Studios'
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." He writes regularly for
the Entertainment section of the Brattleboro Reformer and is an
assistant manager and buyer at First Run Video of Brattleboro.
The lecture series, which is free and open to the public, incorporates
hundreds of slides and archival video clips. Donations are welcome
to help raise money for a trip to London for the Marlboro Elementary
School eighth-graders, who will also be having a bake sale at the
event. Bissette's all-age and adult comic books will also be on
