NewsPress Release: 8/17/01New Library Staff Member Joins Marlboro College
MARLBORO, VT - Marlboro College welcomes new Technical Services Librarian Radmila "Radka" Ballada.
Originally from the Czech Republic, Ballada came to the United States at the age of 16. She earned her master's degrees in library science and history from Southern Connecticut State College. For the past two years, she has worked as the reference and technical services librarian at Champlain College in Burlington. She now resides in Brattleboro.
Leaving the library staff is Heidi Welch, a 1994 Marlboro alumna who has worked as the interlibrary loan librarian at the college since 1995. Welch and her family are moving to Hillsboro, New Hampshire, where she will serve as the media specialist at the local elementary school library.
Ballada joins Marlboro at a time when the college has plans to greatly expand the library's facilities and services. According to Library Director Mary White, "Rice Library was built to accommodate fifty thousand volumes. It now holds more than sixty thousand," which can make for cramped quarters and difficulty housing new acquisitions.
Plans are underway to build an addition to the library, which will more than double the square footage and allow the library to double the number of volumes it can contain. The addition will also provide increased seating capacity, a 15-station computer lab, a six-station media lab, two video editing rooms, a learning and resource center, and archives storage.
Founded in 1946, Marlboro College offers undergraduate education in the liberal arts and, since 1997, graduate study focused in Internet technologies. Its 300 undergraduate students enjoy a 7:1 student-faculty ratio, a voice in governing the college community, and individualized courses of study on a 300-acre campus in the hills of southern Vermont. Marlboro's nearby Brattleboro-based Persons School features three master's degree programs Í Internet Strategy Management, Teaching with Internet Technologies, and Internet Engineering. The Brattleboro campus is located in the Marlboro College Technology Center, which brings together education and entrepreneurship, while offering technology resources to the community.
