MARLBORO, VT - Marlboro College music professor and pianist Luis Batlle and violinist Peggy Spencer will perform all 10 of Beethoven's sonatas for piano and violin in a three-concert series beginning at 3 p.m. October 28.

Batlle and Spencer, who are both instructors at the Brattleboro Music School, will present the sonatas in chronological order. The concert series will continue at 3 p.m. on November 11 and 18.

Preceding each concert at 2 p.m., Batlle and Stan Charkey, also a music professor at Marlboro College, will discuss the history and personality behind the sonatas.

Batlle graduated from the Kolisher Conservatory in Montevideo, Uruguay, and studied in Paris with Ives Nat and in the USA with Rudolf Serkin. He has performed in concerts across North, South, and Central America, and in Europe, Israel, and the former Soviet Union. A Marlboro faculty member since 1980, he has been the mentor to a number of outstanding performers, including Peter Serkin, Cecile Licad, and Peter Orth.

Spencer studied at the Mannes and Manhattan Schools of Music. In addition to being the concert-mistress of the New England Bach Festival Orchestra since 1981, she performs with the Arcadia Players and leads Camp Andantino, a week-long chamber music workshop for adults.

Charkey, who has taught at Marlboro since 1977, graduated from the Hartt College of Music and the University of Massachusetts. He has played as a soloist and chamber musician at Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center and Alice Tully Hall, and as a guest artist at the Marlboro Music Festival, and has written scores for dance, theater, and chamber ensembles.

Each of the lectures and concerts will take place in the Whittemore Theater, which is fully accessible. The lectures and concerts are free and open to public. For more information, please contact the college at (802) 257-4333 or http://www.marlboro.edu.
