NewsPress Release: 2/15/02Marlboro Senior Opens Woodworking Exhibit
MARLBORO, VT - Marlboro College senior Merrall MacNeille will present an exhibit of his work in the Drury Gallery on campus March 4-7.
The
exhibit is the culmination of his Plan of Concentration, and of
his apprenticeship in England with Carl Holtey, the world-renowned
wood infilled metal hand plane maker, during the fall semester.
The exhibit will include four hand planes which MacNeille made (a wood infilled Holtey improvement of a Norris smoothing plane, two different wood infilled shoulder planes, and a wooden plow plane), as well as several pieces of furniture, some shop drawings, and a slide show and photographs documenting the plane-making process.
MacNeille's Plan of Concentration in woodworking includes three papers ("The History of the Wood Infilled Metal Hand Plane," "Stuart Spiers and the Spiers Plane Company," and a paper on his experiences working with Carl Holtey).
The Plan of Concentration is the cornerstone of Marlboro's academic program. It is an in-depth, self-designed exploration of a field or fields of each student's choosing. The Plan culminates in a major independent project involving research, one-to-one study with faculty in tutorials and a three-hour oral examination with Marlboro faculty and an outside examiner who is an expert in the student's field.
Gallery hours are from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday through Friday. The gallery is fully accessible. For more information, please call (802) 257-4333 or visit the college online at http://www.marlboro.edu.
