News Marlboro College Receives Co-op America’s Green Business Network Seal of Approval

Marlboro, VT – (November 11, 2008) – Marlboro College announced it has been accepted into the Co-op America Green Business Network, the oldest, largest, and most diverse network of socially and environmentally responsible businesses in America.

Marlboro joins a handful of higher education institutions that are included in the more than 4,000 member network, including Brattleboro’s School for International Training, as well as Green Mountain College, Antioch of New England, the Bainbridge Graduate Institute and the Presidio School of Management in San Francisco.

The application was initiated by Katie Wilson, program coordinator for Marlboro’s MBA in Managing for Sustainability. A screening committee investigated Marlboro’s familiarity with and commitment to social and environmental responsibility, looking for significant evidence of this commitment in its practices and policies.

“Marlboro is proud to have our commitment to stewardship of the environment and positive treatment of employees and the community honored in this way,” said Wilson, adding that both the undergraduate campus in Marlboro and the Marlboro College Graduate Center were part of the evaluation process.

Current projects underway at Marlboro include energy audits of buildings on both campuses by Keith Abbott of Thermal House and Tad Montgomery of Tad Montgomery & Associates. The audits are funded in part by a state grant awarded to seven of Vermont’s independent colleges and the Getty Foundation Campus Heritage grant that will also place several buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. Formally established in 1992, the Green Business Network was launched with the explicit mission of helping the green business sector — businesses with deep social and environmental commitments — emerge and succeed. The Green Business Network currently comprises 4,000 members.
