News Seven Songs of the Old Man: Concert at Marlboro College
MARLBORO, VT — (March 4, 2008) — Marlboro College will present Seven Songs of the Old Man, a concert composed and conducted by Marlboro senior Will Thomas, on Thursday, March 13 at 7:30PM in Ragle Hall. This event is free and open to the public.
Seven Songs of the Old Man is an adaptation of texts from
the Tao Te Ching, a classic Chinese text. The pieces attempt to capture the
enigmatic style of Lao Tzu, "The Old Man," while also reflecting the
contradictions and metaphors within the Tao Te Ching.
The style of the pieces range from a more classical choral style and a mid twentieth century style to influences from jazz and rhythms adapted from Eastern European music. The 17 member mixed chorus and band, composed of Marlboro students and one faculty member, will be performing a set of pieces written in the quintessentially American "Sacred Harp" genre of choral music.
