News Marlboro College presents ''Margaret's Waltz'' and The MacArthur Family, March 29.

MARLBORO, VT - (March 18, 2009) - Marlboro College will host a free, public screening of Rebecca Padula's film, Margaret's Waltz, on Sunday, March 29, at 3:00 pm in the Whittemore Theater. The MacArthur Family folk band will perform following the film.

Margaret's Waltz is a documentary about Vermont's First Lady of Folk: Margaret MacArthur. The film won the Northeast Alliance for Community Media's award for best documentary event in 2007.

The film is packed with concert footage and interviews taken during two tributes to MacArthur, who recorded 11 albums; co-authored the seminal "Vermont Heritage Song Book" in 1994; was named a New England Living Art Treasure by the University of Massachusetts a year later; and, in 2005, debuted at the Kennedy Center and Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

"She [MacArthur] has made a contribution in the preservation and popularity of American folk music that has proved no less than mighty," wrote Colin Irwin of London's Melody Maker.

A Marlboro resident, MacArthur passed away in May of 2006. Her children, Dan, Gary, and Megan, carry on her folksong tradition as The MacArthur Family. Megan's voice, called "a clear fluid instrument" in SingOut magazine, her simple bass playing, Dan's talented guitar work, home made songs and great singing, all combine with Gary's harmonies and rough and tumble style of fiddle playing, to create a sound that effortlessly carries the listener deep into the history and culture of traditional Vermont life.
