Study Away and Exchange Opportunities

Marlboro offers summer, semester, and year-long programs within the United States and abroad. Students decide on their study away program, and how it fits in with their academic work and personal interests, through one-on-one consultations with faculty and staff. For more information about any of these opportunities, contact Maggie Patari

BISLA, Slovakia

Study as an exchange student in Bratislava. The capital city of Slovakia is located beside the borders of Austria, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, making travel to Vienna, Budapest, and Prague easily accessible. Marlboro’s partnership with Bratislava International School of Liberal Arts, or BISLA, allows Marlboro students to study at BISLA while BISLA students study at Marlboro in an exchange.

Charles University, Czech Republic

For a student seeking a larger university experience in one of Europe’s most historic and beautiful destinations, Marlboro’s partnership with Charles University in Prague is a great program to consider. With close to 50,000 students, a semester or year-long stay at Charles University presents a unique opportunity for students who long for a change of pace from Marlboro, in terms of social and academic culture.

Leuphana University, Germany

Marlboro’s partnership with Leuphana University, a medium-sized campus of just under 8,000, offers a unique undergraduate exchange experience in Lüneburg, Germany. With 30 different degree programs ranging within the fields of sciences, technology, and business, Leuphana’s curriculum differs greatly from Marlboro’s liberal arts emphasis. Such a curriculum would be particularly helpful to students wishing to explore discipline areas for which Marlboro does not formally provide faculty support.

Heilongjiang University, China

For Marlboro students who are Mandarin language learners, our partnership with Heilongjiang University in the "New England" of China is a wonderful program. Students can study for one or two months in an intensive language environment during summer breaks. The exchange is facilitated by Heilongjiang alum and Marlboro Chinese professor Grant Li.

Expedition Education Institute aka “The Bus”

EEI provides semester-long traveling programs each fall and spring, where students and faculty live and learn together out of a custom-retrofitted school bus. The group eats, sleeps, and studies outdoors in specific bioregions, exploring the local and global environmental challenges faced by communities and ecosystems. Students gain a deep and critical understanding of complex issues by learning directly from regionally based leaders, and by engaging diverse geographic and cultural communities as their classroom.

College for Social Innovation - Semester in the City

Students can join CSI as Social Innovation Fellows, and participate in a transformative 15-week program that allows them to address current social issues while developing essential skills and networks that prepare them for life and work after graduation. Social Innovation Fellows will intern four days a week with a leading social sector organization, working under a dedicated mentor. In addition, Fellows will participate in classroom activities and earn full credit from their home college with no additional tuition costs.

AVIC Semester Exchange

Marlboro students have access to 13 other private undergraduate institutions in the state through a semester exchange program spearheaded by the Association of Vermont Independent Colleges (AVIC). The AVIC Semester Exchange Program allows students to experience a different educational environment without leaving the country or facing a language barrier and still graduate on time from your home institution. Colleges currently participating in the exchange program are:

CIEL Semester Exchange

Marlboro belongs to the Consortium for Innovative Environments in Learning, consisting of 12 institutions that share a commitment to progressive educational practices in the Deweyian tradition. While most colleges and universities have innovative programs, often on the margins of traditional practices, CIEL schools put innovation and experimentation at the core of their mission, organization, and everyday work. Marlboro students are eligible to apply for a one- or two-semester exchange to one of the following CIEL institutions.
