Awards

Marlboro College is committed to attracting the very best candidates to our graduate programs. We seek students who share our values of community service, engaged learning, and social responsibility, and we offer the following awards to encourage such exemplary students to join us. Greater Good Award

The $5000 Greater Good Award recognizes incoming graduate students who have demonstrated a commitment to community through national service. To qualify for this award, candidates must be able to demonstrate a minimum of one year of full-time service through a federal program. One year full-time shall be defined as 1500 hours of service completed within a 15-month window. Service must have been completed within the past ten years, and may be paid or volunteer, domestic, or international.

Eligible service includes work with United States Armed Forces (including active reservists and veterans with honorable discharges); Teach for America; World Teach; Americorps or Vista; Peace Corps; or the Fulbright Program. Applicants who are currently working with refugees and migrant workers abroad or in the U.S. may also be considered. Eligibility for the Greater Good Award is restricted to new students matriculating in a graduate degree at Marlboro College. To retain the award, students must enroll in 4 or more credits each trimester. Graduate certificate students are not eligible for the award.

Whetstone Fellowship

Marlboro alumni are ideally suited to continue their education at the graduate school, where they will find a familiar focus on community, self-directed learning, and project-based work. The $5000 Whetstone Fellowship recognizes the positive flow of ideas and values across campuses, as symbolized by the Whetstone Brook connecting the village of Marlboro to the town of Brattleboro.

To qualify for a Whetstone Fellowship, candidates must already hold a first degree from Marlboro College and be seeking to complete a second degree from Marlboro. The first Marlboro degree may be at the bachelor’s or master’s level. To retain the award, students must enroll in 4 or more credits each trimester. Graduate certificate students are not eligible for the award.

John Dewey Award

In honor of Vermont native John Dewey’s inspired contributions to the field of education, the $5000 John Dewey Award recognizes incoming graduate students who have served others through engaged teaching practices at the pre-k, elementary, secondary, or adult education level, following the learning ideals of Marlboro College. To qualify for this award, candidates must have taught for a minimum of one academic year as a lead teacher.

This award does not apply to college-level educators, one-on-one tutors or parents of home-schooled students. Eligibility for the John Dewey Award is restricted to new students matriculating in a graduate degree at Marlboro College. To retain the award, students must enroll in 4 or more credits each trimester. Graduate certificate students are not eligible for the award.

Award Disbursement

Each of these $5000 awards will be will be disbursed at $1000 per trimester over the award-holder’s first five trimesters enrolled in a Marlboro graduate degree program. Should a student choose an accelerated course and complete the degree in fewer than five trimesters, the balance remaining in the award will be disbursed in the student's final trimester of study. No award will be disbursed during an approved leave of absence. In the case of an approved leave of absence, the award disbursal period will extend past five trimesters.

Maintaining Eligibility
To retain a Greater Good Award, John Dewey Award, or Whetstone Fellowship, students must:

  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress each trimester enrolled at the graduate school;
  • Enroll in 4 credits or more per trimester.

Award renewal
Funding commitments for these awards will be approved on an annual basis by the college. Award opportunities may be restructured in future years, as college priorities continue to evolve. These decisions will not affect current award-holders.

To be considered for a Greater Good Award, John Dewey Award, or Whetstone Fellowship, candidates must complete an application for a graduate degree program at Marlboro College. In addition to the program application, candidates must also provide:

Proof of service would typically take the form of a certificate, diploma, or letter of verification from a supervisor or program coordinator.

Essay
Please use one of the following prompts to shape a written reflection on your service, teaching or learning experience. 

  • Write about a conflict or problem you have encountered in your classroom or community work that stirred observation, reflection and/or ingenuity. 

  • Tell a story about a time when you saw character and intellect develop in tandem, and share how that experience has shaped your view of education. 

  • Describe a time in your life in which engagement with the world led to an awakening or a deeper understanding.

The award essay is in addition to any other statements required in the standard application for the degree program.  Essays should be approximately 500 words.

If a student's award package has already been calculated prior to receiving an institutional scholarship the financial aid office will recalculate the total amount of aid to be disbursed factoring in the amount of the scholarship.
