Accelerated Master's Track


Have you always wanted to travel to unusual places, meet interesting people, and teach them? The Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MATESOL) program provides you with the skills to do just that. With increasing globalization, migration, and growing refugee crises around the world, there has never been a more urgent need for English teachers, both here in the U.S. and abroad. The MATESOL program will not only prepare you for this role, it will give you the foundation to teach with intention, mindfulness, and courage. The program prepares teachers who are aware of the complex role of English in the world today and who base their practice on inter-cultural understanding and critical reflection.

Many courses of study can complement the accelerated master's track for MATESOL, but ideally you would have some coursework in English, language arts, linguistics, and/or anthropology. During your undergraduate years you will take 7 credits toward a TESOL certificate, and complete a 2-credit, supervised teaching practicum in Costa Rica. As a graduate student in the MATESOL program, you will attend two eight-week, summer residencies in Marlboro, separated by an academic year of supported teaching and online coursework. During the academic year, you will be placed in one of six refugee/immigration centers across the country, where you will have the opportunity to practice your pedagogy and help immigrant families in their adjustment to life in the United States. This rewarding placement, coordinated by the college in partnership with the U.S. Committee on Refugees and Immigrants and supported by faculty, will set you up for a lifetime of similarly enriching experiences teaching English to people from diverse cultures.
