We’ve designed this program for:

  • Employees who provide training and capacity-building in their daily work
  • Independent consultants – especially those working with nonprofits – plus people who are considering consulting as a career
  • People who want to provide these services to their own organizations, networks, or coalitions

Our trainers are skilled at meeting the needs of a variety of learners and learning styles. You can expect a combination of instruction, exercises, small group work, writing, problem-solving, role playing, and skill-building games.

A curriculum customized to meet your needs

We will cover a variety of subjects, providing ample opportunities for you to practice, make mistakes, reflect, and improve your skills. You will learn how to:

  • Understand different ways people learn and engage
  • Design and run effective meetings, workshops, and retreats
  • Assess and respond to simple and complex group problems and tasks
  • Manage groups and group process; creating the conditions for groups to be productive and function at their best
  • Build consensus and skillfully address conflict
  • Consult with groups and build relationships with clients, partners, and peers
  • Increase your confidence working with groups in any context

About 40 percent of our classroom time will be devoted to training, 40 percent to facilitation, and 20 percent to consulting. Through breakout sessions and individual coaching, we are excited to adapt the content to meet your specific needs and offer lots of tips and tricks from the trainer’s toolbox.

  • Two in-person workshops—October 2019 and April 2020—at a beautiful retreat in Chesterfield, New Hampshire—a total of five days of intensive, hands-on training.
  • Four hours of personalized coaching, including opportunities to shadow and learn from instructors. (As requested, additional hours are available for purchase.)

  • A notebook of training and facilitation resources, with links to additional online resources.

Your Training Team

Our team of instructors and coaches has a combined 80+ years of relevant experience with nonprofits, government agencies, and corporate clients. Collectively, they’ve facilitated more than a thousand workshops, classes, retreats, planning processes, and community collaborations.

Andy Robinson • Board Leadership Institute, Core CNL Consultant, Nonprofit Management Certificate, TFC Certificate

Andy provides training and consulting for nonprofits in fundraising, grant-seeking, board development, marketing earned income, planning, leadership development, and facilitation. Andy has worked with organizations in 47 US states and Canada. He specializes in the needs of groups working for human rights, social justice, environmental conservation, historic preservation, and community development.

Andy is the author of several books. His most recent, Train Your Board (and Everyone Else) to Raise Money, contains easy-to-use fundraising exercises. He is also the author of How to Raise $500 to $5000 From Almost Anyone, Selling Social Change (Without Selling Out)The Board Member's Easier Than You Think Guide to Nonprofit Finances, Grassroots Grants, and Great Boards for Small Groups, all helpful guides for nonprofit organizations. Andy is also a frequent contributor to Grassroots Fundraising Journal, a publication focused on the connection between fundraising, social justice and movement-building.

When he’s not on the road, Andy lives in Plainfield, Vermont with his spouse, a woodlot filled with wildlife, and a garden that is completely out of control.

Dianne Russell • TFC Certificate

  • Work: Institute for Conservation Leadership
  • Education: BA, Wittenberg University

The president of the Institute for Conservation Leadership (ICL), Dianne Russell leads the fundraising, financial management, and oversight of ICL’s program design and delivery. Dianne brings 30 years of experience with over 2,000 environmental and conservation groups across North America to ICL’s efforts to grow innovative and lasting organizational and collaborative change initiatives. Dianne blends her knowledge of human systems with a deep understanding of the strategies needed to create healthy natural systems and communities. She specializes in leadership, organizational development, strategic planning, and meeting design and facilitation. Dianne has helped to conceptualize and guide ICL’s program work with the Delaware River Watershed Initiative, Vital Lands Illinois, and programs for executive and staff leadership development within the Land Trust Alliance.

Previous staff positions included work with Americans for the Environment, Union of Concerned Scientists, and Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy (SANE). A native of the Great Lakes region, Dianne earned a double degree in religion and sociology from Wittenberg University (Ohio). Dianne has received coaching and training from the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland (Becoming a Better Intervener) and from VISIONS (Multicultural Skills Development).

Stephanie Lahar • TFC Certificate

Stephanie Lahar has worked with hundreds of organizations across private, nonprofit, and government sectors in a consulting career that has spanned 30 years, honing her long-term interests and expertise in the psychology of leaders, teams, and organizations, and in systems dynamics. Her Montpelier-based firm Stephanie Lahar and Associates, LLC helps clients in New England and beyond increase their strategic impact and develop their organizations. She has also served in the past on the faculty of the University of Vermont and for seven years as Academic Dean at Woodbury College. She has an M.A. in Psychology.
